Remote Liberty Maine Farm Stand named Amongst the Best in America

Joey | Published April 24, 2024 (WCYY)

For the majority of us, grabbing some fruits and vegetables requires a trip to the grocery store. Maine has a handful of terrific grocery stores committed to offering customers local produce from nearby farms.

But for others, that's not quite good enough. They want to know that those fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy are coming from the farm right next door or down the road, which is why farm stands remain a popular destination for many who live in Maine (as well as those who visit).

LoveFood recently put together a list of the best farm stands in every state throughout the country. And while their choice for Maine might require a road trip for many, it's truly a one-stop shop for all things fresh and local.

LoveFood put the spotlight on Wild Grace Farm Store and Cafe in Liberty. The gorgeous and rustic farm stand overlooks Lake St. George, and has become a summer destination for many who pass through the area.

Wild Grace operates like a traditional farm stand, where you can find locally grown meats, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables as well as local products like bread, honey, jams, and small gifts.

it's also made a name for itself thanks to its on-site cafe. Offering breakfast and lunch, the cafe can get busy thanks to its delicious selection of salads, sandwiches, paninis, and fresh coffee.

Wild Grace is a family-operated seasonal business. The farm stand will open for 2024 starting in the middle of May, with the cafe opening on June 1.

In a picturesque setting overlooking Lake St. George, this gorgeous country store is stocked with delicious produce, which is either grown and produced at the family farm, or delivered by the farm's neighbors. You’ll find meat, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, jam, wine, beer, cider, and even mead here – and there's a farm-to-table café that serves coffee, breakfast sandwiches, salads, paninis, and sweet treats, too.

Today’s Farms are the Food Stars of Maine’s MidCoast

In recent years, Maine has enjoyed a farming renaissance with an influx of many twenty- and thirty-somethings who want to farm. In fact, Maine now has the fifth youngest farmer population in the country. That movement has revitalized many small family operations and spurred a boom in sustainable and organic farming methods. With abundant water, good soils, and cool weather, farming is poised to steadily grow. Want to taste some of that love and hard work? You’ll find wonderful farm stands throughout the MidCoast and of course, you can enjoy amazingly fresh, local foods at restaurants everywhere. Here are just some of the region’s great farms.

 Wild Grace Farm – Liberty

In the summer of 2017, a young couple visiting the MidCoast region, happened upon a sale sign for an old homestead with 50 acres on a hill in Liberty. Immediately they knew this was a special place to call home, raise a family, and to grow their own produce. Today Wild Grace Farm is a biodiverse farm with a large variety of fruits, veggies, herbs, and wild edibles. Their Farm Store & Café in Liberty is open daily and offers a seasonal variety of fruits, vegetables, and a modest farm-to-table place for take-out and eat-in. wildgracefarm.com

Eat & Run: Wild Grace Farm a handy stop on Route 3

The store and cafe in Liberty serves breakfast and lunch all day.

Wild Grace Farm is a store and cafe right off Route 3 in Liberty, and the small, spaced-out signs lining the road leading up to it – advertising its offerings, from coffee to produce – indicate that it caters to people who are on the way to somewhere else.

For me, that wasn’t somewhere far – a lakeside Airbnb a mile or two away – but I was early for the official check-in time and needed lunch.

The store and cafe serves breakfast and lunch all day, with a focus on paninis, including meatball; barbecue pulled pork; and apple, cheddar and honey, all served with a side of salad or fresh fruit. I chose the smoked salmon ($12), with Casco Bay cream cheese, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and dill, while my cabin-mate opted for the mango curry chicken salad (also $12).

While waiting for the sandwiches to be prepared, I perused the store’s merchandise, which is mostly Maine-made items, including wallets, tea towels, jams and pickles. I took note of the small selection of fresh produce, cheese and meat, as well as beer and wine, in case we ran out of supplies, and picked up a quart of strawberries, fearing I might otherwise miss out on what was a particularly short and sweet season.

When my order was ready, I took the to-go boxes to a patio table outside, overlooking a field with other scattered tables to one side and Route 3 to the other. I had failed to read the menu’s fine print, saying that the paninis were served on Back 40 Bakehouse multigrain bread (or a gluten-free option), and was pleasantly surprised to see the salmon wasn’t engulfed by thick pieces of ciabatta as I’d imagined. It was more like a basic sandwich on toasted bread than what I think of as a panini and a much lighter meal than expected, nicely rounded out by the side of fresh greens in balsamic dressing.

I had a bite of the chicken salad, which had a great balance of sweetness and spice and would probably be my order if I return for lunch. I did for breakfast a couple days later, on my way out of town, grabbing a cold brew ($2.50) for the road and bacon and egg sandwich ($7.50).

Over my short long weekend, Wild Grace Farm served several purposes for me. It’s a handy spot to know about if you’re headed east of Augusta and beats a drive-through off the highway in Newport, if you’re trying to decide which way to go.

Farming the Passion behind the Food

by Jeremy Grant | July 3, 2019

“I moved to Waldo, County less than a year ago with my family and we love it. One thing that is undeniable, is how the farming culture here is a massive part of what makes this area great. I spent some time meeting with local farmers and speaking to them about why they chose to start farming in Waldo County. I hope you enjoy this video. I had the privilege of partnering with the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce to help put this video together and wanted to say thank you!

Also a huge thank you to Toddy Pond Farm, Wild Grace Farm and Daisy Chain Farm for taking the time to hang out and show me around their amazing farms! I'm so grateful to all of you and your encouragement and support. I could not do this without you all!
